Convert JPG and PNG to AVIF

AVIF usually beats WebP and JPG on size at the same quality. Add your pictures and they are encoded to AVIF by a WebAssembly build of libavif inside this page.

Mode

Your files never leave this device. Everything is processed in the browser, nothing is uploaded.

    What to expect

AVIF encoding is slower than JPG or WebP: a 12 megapixel photo can take several seconds. The encoder is loaded only when you first choose AVIF, because it is about 3.5 MB.

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or newer can display AVIF. Older systems cannot, so keep a JPG or WebP fallback if your audience is not on a recent browser.

    Settings

A quality of 60 to 70 in AVIF looks close to JPG 80 for photos. Transparency is preserved. Very large images can run out of memory in the browser; resize them first with the Resize mode.

    Questions

Can I open the AVIF result in Photoshop?

Support depends on the version. If an editor does not open it, convert to WebP or JPG instead.

    Why is it slow?

The AV1 codec searches for the best way to store the picture, which costs time. Smaller pictures finish quickly.

Can I add AVIF files as input?

Yes, if your browser can display AVIF. They can be saved as AVIF again or as JPG, PNG or WebP.

    Is anything uploaded?

No. The encoder file is downloaded to your browser like any page asset, and your pictures stay where they are.
